Meet Lawrence Thenu

Hello! I am a Permanent Professionally Certified Teacher and Canadian Certified Counsellor. I have over 20 years of combined experience helping children, teenagers, and families manage and overcome academic, social, emotional, and mental struggles that pop up during those messy developmental years.

My work focuses on Adolescent Identity Development, Learning Disabilities, emotional disorders, and trauma. I believe in client-centred counselling. As such, I use different modalities, like Dialectical Behaviour Therapy, Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, and Narrative techniques to help my clients navigate their personal obstacles. Finally, I also offer Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) is a kind of therapy that helps people deal with tough feelings and memories, especially those related to trauma, anxiety, or depression. It’s a newer approach that combines regular talk therapy with different methods like guided imagery and quick eye movements. The main goal is to help individuals process and manage their difficult memories and emotions more quickly. What’s unique about ART is that it usually takes less time than other types of therapy, making it a good option for those who want to see results faster.

My personal and professional experiences as a parent, scientist, teacher, and counsellor have provided me with some essential insights in adolescent behaviour. This gives me the skills to advocate, facilitate, and mediate change for my young clients and their families. Even if the struggles are manageable, I still believe in the occasional “tune-up” to keep momentum going.

My motto is:

If they have a dream, they need a plan”.

Through my educational experience, I have provided academic counselling to students working on their futures. I will use tools and strategies to help students identify practical steps needed to find their passions.

As a counsellor and educator, I see the daily struggles that children deal with. As a parent, I understand what it is like to want to help your child through the tough times. I can advise parents and caregivers as to what support for a child looks like and help young clients develop the resilience to empower themselves.

Lawrence sees clients virtually or in person on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 5PM-9PM and Saturdays and Sundays from noon-4PM. Fees for all services other than ART are $130 per 50 minute session. Fees for ART services are $200 per 50 minute session.
